The latest news from the local boxing scene

Unbeaten Shepherds Bush cruiserweight Mikael Lawal hopes to have an action-packed start to 2018.

The former Stonebridge man has signed with Sauerland Promotions and will fight on the undercard of the WBC and WBO world cruiserweight title fight between Mairis Breidis and Oleksandr Usyk.

That bout is scheduled for Arena Riga in Latvia for January 27, which would mark Lawal’s first fighting appearance outside of the United Kingdom.

The 22-year-old will then have a short turnaround before fighting on the undercard of George Groves’ WBA world super middleweight title defence on February 17.

Groves will go up against British rival Chris Eubank Jr. at the Manchester Arena, with the card being shown by ITV Box Office.

Wins on both cards would be a great start to the New Year for Lawal, who four wins, three by stoppage, from his four professional bouts since making his professional debut in April last year.
