A clear-up operation is underway in Brent today to repair the damage across the borough caused by St Jude’s storm yesterday.
Around 70 trees, at least three cars and scores of garden fences were damaged during the gale force weather which swept across the nation.
In St Paul’s Avenue in Willesden, contractors arrived at 10am to remove a tree which fell on a Mercedes and a Golf leaving them with substantial damage.
Ian Williamson, owner of the Mercedes, bought the car a year ago as his wife was excepting and spent £1,000 fixing the vehicle just before disaster struck.
He told the Times: “I was woken up by a ring at the door from my neighbour who figured I should have a look outside. Thing is, the tree was rotten through the core, it probably didn’t need the big wind to push it over.
“We didn’t worry about it as it was inspected at some point during the summer. However we can now see there was a big hole about 10 feet up so it’s pretty much completely hollow...
“Thank god it didn’t fall on anyone and it was just a car; even one I just spent a small fortune fixing up.”
In Dollis Hill Lane, Dollis Hill, a third car was damaged by another felled tree while in Preston Park in Wembley, several trees face being chopped down due to the damage sustained in the storm.
Other casualties including a Rowan tree which blocked the path leading to Kensal Green train station, a partially uprooted tree in Barnhill Road, Wembley, which has also caused pavement damage, and reports of the rear entrance to Erin Court in Walm Lane, Willesden, being blocked by a fallen tree..
