Pupils from a school in Stonebridge dressed from head to toe in traditional welsh attire to attend an annual visit to the House of Commons to commemorate St David’s Day.
The youngsters at the London Welsh School in Shakespeare Avenue, lent their voices to entertain an audience including John Bercow, the speaker of the House of Commons, and recited a traditional song to celebrate their national day on Friday.
Julie Sullivan, head teacher, said: “It is such a wonderful opportunity to be part of St David’s Day celebrations in Westminster every year. It is a real privilege. The children and their families look forward to this grand annual event and the children really enjoy performing here.”
As part of the celebrations the school also hosted a mini concert for neighbouring Welsh Mothers and Toddlers group, ‘Miri Mawr,’ and took part in a Welsh festival of music and literature called an Eisteddfod, in which children go head to head in a singing competition.
Eleri Brady, chair of the school’s governors, said: “We had a very happy day at the school commemorating St David - a significant day among the Welsh community and it was great to see all the children looking wonderful dressed up in traditional costume.”
