Alperton Community School has finished the first phase of its expansion project with the official opening of a new building packed with 83 classrooms on Ealing Road.

On hand at the opening of the school, which is arranged on three floors and is designed to house 300 extra students, were the Mayor of Brent Parvez Ahmed and Brent North MP Barry Gardiner.

The new facility has a new library, 14 science laboratories, 10 ICT rooms, five art rooms, two music rooms, two drama studios, six design and technology rooms and a dining hall capable of accommodating 450 students at a single sitting.

Members of the community will be able to use the new sports hall – which has four badminton courts and three cricket practice nets – as a leisure centre.

The school has also said that they will be taking traffic calming and safety measures outside the school by widening the pavements on Ealing Road.

Headteacher Gerard McKenna said: “It is particularly pleasing that students have moved into

a ‘state-of-the-art’ facility at a time when they have exceeded all expectations in delivering a tremendous set of GCSE and A Level results.

“In addition Ofsted inspected the school in July and judged it to be “Good” with “outstanding” leadership and management.”

The school was selected for redevelopment through the Government’s £4.4 billion Priority School Building Programme and the project is being led by the Education Funding Agency.

Phase two of the project, set to be completed in January of next year, sill see the addition of sports facilities and more teaching accommodation.
