Notting Hill Carnival 2024 stabbings: Three fight for life

While many danced and embraced the annual celebration of Caribbean culture, there were also spates of violence in the vicinity of the event on both Sunday (August 25) and Monday (August 26).

Three arrested after woman stabbed

On the Sunday, a woman, 32, who was with her young child was rushed to hospital after officers deployed in Golborne Road, near Westbourne Park, were made aware of a stabbing.

Officers, including police medics, gave emergency medical treatment until paramedics arrived.

She was taken to hospital where she remains in a critical condition.

While the investigation is ongoing, initial police enquiries suggest the woman got caught up in a fight between two groups of men.

However it is not yet clear if they were known to her.

A man, 20, was arrested today (August 27) on suspicion of attempted murder and violent disorder.

Two other men, 24 and 22, were arrested on suspicion of violent disorder.

All three were arrested at separate addresses in Hammersmith and Fulham.

There were also two other people who were injured at the carnival on Sunday.

The Metropolitan Police last said a 29-year-old man was in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and a 24-year-old man also stabbed, whose condition had yet to be confirmed.

Five stabbings on Monday

Latest police figures record five stabbings during the second day of festivities – two victims had slash wounds and one attack involved a corrosive substance.

Two people are in a life-threatening condition from the attacks.

While the Metropolitan Police said it could not provide further detail on where exactly these knife incidents took place, a spokesperson said they are all within the carnival's footprint.

Throughout the day 49 arrests were made on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon, and one arrest was made on suspicion of possessing a firearm.

It also resulted in 35 officers being injured and 230 arrests.

Appeal for help

Following the recent arrests after the attack on Sunday, Commander Charmain Brenyah, the Met’s spokesperson for Notting Hill Carnival, called for the public’s help.

She said: “Our thoughts, first and foremost, are with the woman who is fighting for her life in hospital and with her loved ones. She came to Carnival to have fun, with her young child, and was caught up in the most awful violence.

“These arrests are a significant step in the investigation. They are the result of a determined effort by detectives who have worked around the clock to identify, locate and arrest these suspects. We should not underestimate how much more difficult those vital early stages of an investigation are when they take place in the context of a busy, crowded event like Carnival.”

She added: “Our investigations into the other incidents over the weekend continue.”
