The fatal stabbing of a woman in a high street was an “isolated incident”, police have said.

Officers were called to Burnt Oak Broadway, Edgware, to reports of a stabbing shortly before 12pm yesterday (May 9).

A 66-year-old woman was treated at the scene for knife wounds, but died shortly afterwards.

Police have confirmed that her next of kin have been informed.

A 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder, and he remains in custody at a north London police station.

Today (May 10), Detective Chief Inspector Alex Gammampila, who is leading the investigation, said: “I know that the effects of this incident will be felt throughout the local community and would like to reassure everyone that a man is in custody.

“We are working hard to establish the full circumstances and motive for this offence, which we believe to be an isolated incident.”

Police have now appealed for anyone who has phone or dashcam footage, or who may have witnessed something, to get in touch, regardless of how insignificant it might seem.

Superintendent Tony Bellis, who is responsible for policing Edgware, added: “A family has been left devastated by this shocking attack and my thoughts are with them at this unimaginably difficult time.

“Local people will notice an increased police presence in the area in the coming days to provide reassurance.

“If you have concerns or just want to speak with officers, please do approach them as they patrol.”

Metropolitan Police, London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance all attended the scene yesterday afternoon.

The murder investigation, codenamed Operation Birchgrove, is ongoing, police have said.

Anyone with information or footage is urged to call the incident room on 020 7175 2206, or 101, quoting reference 3105/9May.
