There has been chaos today as police have closed off a road for 11 hours since the early morning.

Police with riot shields were spotted this morning (July 17) at the junction of Kilburn High Road and Cavendish Road where a man reportedly threw bits of furniture and dangerous household items from a balcony at a flat above the Sainsbury’s Local.

At the time of publication, this remains an ongoing incident.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said police were first called at 4.40am to reports of a man "causing a disturbance and throwing items from a flat".

Images show objects scattered across the road from the incident, and it’s understood a police car as well as other vehicles were damaged.

There has been a heavy police presence in the area as police deal with the incident, but despite many officers – as well as those equipped with riot shields – the issue has been ongoing for over 11 hours.

In our live blog coverage, we held off further describing some of the actions today due to concerns for the man’s mental health.

However given the length of the police operation and interest from the public, we reported that at one point today the man was seen wearing just his underwear and sunglasses as he yelled very loudly to the public while standing at a balcony.

It is understood that in the afternoon there was also damage to the building, affecting neighbouring flats.

The Met spokesperson said: "Officers are on scene and attempting to engage with the man and there are concerns for his safety.

"London Ambulance Service and London Fire Brigade have attended the scene.

"Road closures remain in place at the location while the incident remains ongoing."

The Met has not commented, despite being asked, on why the incident has taken so many hours to deal with.
