The Bakerloo line and London Overground will be closed at various points for just over a month this summer.
Getting around the city to make the most of the sunny months ahead will be difficult in north London due to major work set to take place between July 23 and August 25.
This will be carried out to a 20-mile stretch of line, with closures in four phases:
Phase 1
Between July 23 and July 30, the Bakerloo line will be closed between Queen’s Park and Harrow & Wealdstone.
The Overground will also be closed between Euston and Watford Junction.
Phase 2
In a lengthier period between July 31 and August 10, the Bakerloo line will be closed between Stonebridge Park and Harrow & Wealdstone.
The Overground will be closed between Willesden Junction and Watford Junction.
Phase 3
Then between August 11 and August 17, the Bakerloo line is closed between Queen’s Park and Harrow & Wealdstone.
Again, the Overground will be closed between Euston and Watford Junction.
Phase 4
Between August 18 and August 25, the Bakerloo line will be fully open once more.
However, work will continue on the Overground, with closures between Willesden Junction and Watford Junction.
Why is this happening?
The Network Rail says that carrying out the work in consecutive weeks will save time, and some of the work would take years in weekend or overnight sessions.
Improvements will include replacing wooden sleepers dating back to the 1950s with concrete ones, replacing signal cabling, and upgrading power supplies and railway drainage.
There will also be improvements to six stations including Watford High Street, with makeovers including platform resurfacing and roof canopy maintenance.
James Dean, Network Rail’s West Coast South route director, said: “We know there’s never an ideal time to close the railway, so I’d like to thank passengers for their understanding in advance while we carry out these significant improvements to the Bakerloo line and London Overground.
“I appreciate that doing this essential work over consecutive weeks will be disruptive for passengers so I’d urge people to keep in mind the line between Euston and Watford will be closed and to check National Rail Enquiries and TfL for alternative public transport options in and out of the capital.”
